With e-cigs becoming increasingly popular we look at the health implications surrounding them.
Are e-cigs dangerous?
This is a difficult question to answer. E-cigs are most definately less dangerous than normal cigarettes for a number of reasons. Firstly they do not contain many of the horrible carcinogenic substances that are found in normal cigarettes. As e-cigs do not contain any tobacco and do not burn anything there is no formation of Tar and many other toxins. The second hand smoke produced by e-cigs has been researched and shown to be harmless to people around you, which is much better than the normal toxic second hand smoke from normal cigarettes.
What is in ecig e-liquid then and is it actually dangerous?
E-cigarette e-juice is made up of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, nicotine and flavourings. Whilst all the additives have been aproved indivdually by the FDA as being fit for consumption there is little research as how these substances react with our bodies when inhaled. Some studies have shown that e-cig vapor is not entirely harmless as it contains formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. However the amounts found were 9 times less than a normal cigarette so in that respect whilst not being entirely harmless e-cig vapor can be seen as being a lot less damaging for your health.
I think its just common sense, you are afterall inhaling stuff into your lungs that probably shouldnt be inhaled so in that respect e-cig vapor is obviously not harmless. On the whole face of things though it is in my oppinion much less damaging than normal cigarettes. Those our my thoughts on a very controverisal topic.
